The Original Beauty Blender vs Real Technique Miracle Complexion Sponge

Hello Boo

Beauty sponges or makeup sponges have been around for quite some time. I remember when I first started learning how to apply makeup I used to apply my foundation-using sponges because I see a lot of other people do it. Sadly, I never got the outcomes that I want. Some people use it wet and some people use it dry. It’s very contradicting and confusing. So, I just stopped using sponges.

That was in the past and makeup sponges have been revolutionized so much since then. Now, all beauty company is trying to come out with their own version of makeup sponges. If I’m not mistaken, Beauty Blender is the pioneer for the revolutionize makeup sponges, correct me if I’m wrong. When it first came out, it got so many positive reviews from the beauty community. Even until now people are still talking about it. It is considered to be beauty staple for every beauty guru.

Don’t throw away Beauty Blender plastic casing. It can be used as drying stand for you sponge.

Since all of my favorite beauty gurus are raving about Beauty Blender, I got one for myself few months back. And I also bought Real Technique Miracle Complexion Sponge because I heard that Real Technique Miracle Complexion Sponge is quite comparable to the real Beauty Blender. So, without further ado let’s see what I have to say about these two funny looking sponges.

Price: I bought both of the sponges online and I’m not sure if you can get them at any standing shops in Malaysia. I paid RM60 for my Beauty Blender and paid RM38 for my Real Technique Miracle Complexion Sponge. I bought both of them at Carousell. If you don’t know what Carousell is, you can read my long explanation and obsession for the apps here. I bought my Beauty Blender at a slightly lower price because I got it from a girl who bought extra and wanted to let go the extra. Lucky me. Yay!

Shapes and size:

So cute!

Beauty Blender takes a shape of an egg except that at the bottom it has a pointed end. While the bottom blender also has a pointed end, at the other end it has a slanted flat surface that I find quite efficient in blending my foundation. When I wet them, I can safely say that both of the sponges will expand 2-3 times larger than it’s original size. In term of size, Real Technique Miracle Complexion Sponge is slightly bigger than Beauty Blender.

By just looking at the sponges, you can’t really tell if those are made from same material or not. They both look like sponges right? A sponge is a sponge. But you can totally tell a difference between these two sponges when you touch and squeeze them. Beauty Blender feels really bounce and it seems like there’s hollow space in it. With RT sponge, it feels like a bit bulky and not really squeezable.

Pros and Cons: Before using the sponges, I wet them first. The first difference I can tell between both of the sponges is I feel like Real Technique sponge retains more water than Beauty Blender. With Beauty Blender, I can easily squeeze out excess water but with Real Technique sponge I feel like even though I squeeze out really hard there’s still water in it. It feels heavier too. I’m not sure how it will affect the makeup application but I think Real Technique Sponge will absorb more products. So that means there will be more products build up in the Real Technique sponge and it can cause breakouts if you don’t clean it rigorously. That’s one thing to keep in mind.

Both of the sponges apply makeup like a dream. Both of them will give me sort of an airbrush effect that I really love. I like to use the pointed end to blend out concealer right underneath my eyes and around my nose. I also use it to do a bit of contouring around my face. The round base can be used to apply blush and foundation. Works like a wonder. Walllah…. It’s really handy and very multi task.

How to use (applies to both sponges):

  1. Before you use it, it is important that you wet the sponge. Never use it dry. Place it under running water and keep squeezing the water out until it gets as big as it’s gonna get.
  2. After you’re satisfied with the size, close the water tap then take tissue paper and give it a big squeeze another time just to make sure the water is not dripping.
  3. Then it’s ready to be used.

Steps on how to achieve flawless makeup using Beauty Blender

Verdict: I love both of my funny looking sponges. I feel like I can apply my makeup just by using the sponges. Both can be used for pretty much everything like for applying blush, bronzer, foundation, concealer, and powder. Haha. Who needs makeup brushes? I just feel like I prefer my Beauty Blender just a little tiny bit more than my RT Miracle Complexion Sponge because I think RT sponge builds more products in it. It can cause breakouts around my face because I have really sensitive skin. I also feel like it needs to be clean more thoroughly and regularly. Maybe I should invest some money on the sponge cleanser but the one by Beauty Blender can cost around RM70 a bottle. It just seems too much for me. For now, I just clean my sponges using baby shampoo and it can be quite a task.

I know some of you would like to know if RT Miracle Complexion Sponge is really a dupe for Beauty Blender sponge or not. I can’t really compare with any other sponges because I only have those two. In my opinion, they’re both can apply makeup flawlessly but you can tell there’s difference in qualities.  I don’t know how to explain it but you’ll know when you’re using it. Will I repurchase? I say yes to both. Which one will I choose? It’ll depends on my budget.
